Evian Spa

Designing a first-of-its-kind wellness experience

The design aims to create a fluid space for Evian Spa guests, but also a spatial narrative that enhances the experience of architectural proportions, surfaces, and scale in a sequence of wider and narrower interconnected spaces.
The form and organisation of the Evian Spa are based on the nature of water as a visual reference. Like a river that makes its way through the snow in the French Alps, it forms a riverbed with a composition of different aggregate states of water, fostering peace and relaxation. Accordingly, the architectural concept is based on sensitive dialogues between liquid and solid, expanse and confinement, cooling and warming, and transparency and opacity.

Dietmar Leyk, cofounder:
‘FROM THE BEGINNING, THE THINKING BEHIND THE EVIAN SPA WAS A SENSUAL SPACE IN WHICH THE CALM QUALITY OF LIGHT, NATURAL MATERIALS, AND SENSITIVE PROPORTIONS ARE IN THE FOREGROUND.’

A white marble floor unites all the rooms of the Evian Spa. As one moves through this walkable sculpture, the inclination of its walls changes gently throughout the riverbed. All walls are covered by horizontal louvres, creating indirect light and fluid edges. In accordance with the desired time of the day, light temperatures change smoothly from warm to cold light, from sunrise light to mid-day light, and then to sunset light, but are always sensitively calibrated to ensure subtle ways of achieving key architectural experiences.
