On Liveable Density

Mutualities II

“Mutualities – On Liveable Density by SPACECOUNCIL showcases how meticulously designed urban densification can transform cities into greener, more integrated spaces, revealing their potential as dynamic engines for sustainable urban futures.”

Sonja Berthold, principal and founder

Cities are our future - possessing the resources and potential to become protagonists in a radical transformation aimed at countering the dramatic effects of CO2 emissions while evolving to be greener, healthier, and more integrated. The future of urban design is at the heart of the exhibition 'Mutualities – On Liveable Density' by SPACECOUNCIL at ArchitekturSalon Hamburg.

This exhibition presents SPACECOUNCIL’s projects through models, videos, and visualisations, demonstrating how urban spaces can be expanded through vertical growth and enhanced through meticulously designed densification. The architects reveal the potential of sustainable infill developments - densities that improve our planet through forward-thinking metropolises, which are compact yet verdant, digitalised, and both spatially and functionally permeable.

SPACECOUNCIL views urban densification as a key strategy for future urban planning, especially given the global competition for locations. The challenges of the coming decades - whether climate change, resource scarcity, or growing populations - compel us to reassess how we transform our cities into pioneering urban environments and design new districts and architectures.

In a global context where cities vie for investment and talent, SPACECOUNCIL considers carefully designed urban density a crucial factor in managing increasing renewal pressures while maintaining economic, sustainable, and culturally dynamic positions. In a future characterised by exponentially growing knowledge economies, immediate proximity not only stimulates vigorous exchange and interaction but also amplifies the creative synergy of diverse elements.

Within this framework of urban densification, the design of public spaces assumes a paramount significance. As reflections of a city’s or place’s identity, they amplify a sense of community, creating inviting atmospheres that encourage people to connect and experience urban life in its full diversity.

SPACECOUNCIL’s design ambition is marked by the application of impactful principles such as stacking, layering, and injections of mass and void, which endow vertical structures with distinctive forms, unique spaces, and clear organisation.

'Mutualities – On Liveable Density' provides insight into SPACECOUNCIL’s research and practice areas, significantly shaped by their extensive experience in Singapore, one of the world’s greenest and most innovative cities. The exhibition invites exploration of the potentials and challenges of urban densification in various contexts, offering solutions for a more liveable future.
