Loft LK1
A study of simplicity and refinement"Loft LK1 takes full advantage of its elevated position in Berlin, embracing sweeping views and distinctive light conditions. The design distills these qualities into three recessed volumes, which subtly define the open plan, drawing light deep into the interior and shaping ever-changing plays of illumination. The softened edges and reflective finishes of these forms amplify the sense of spatial flow, dissolving the boundaries between the kitchen, living areas, and the cityscape beyond."
Dietmar Leyk, principal and founder
Loft LK1 occupies an uncommon height for Berlin, offering sweeping views and exceptional light conditions. The design approach embraces and elevates these attributes, delivering a composition that is both understated and deeply resonant.
The apartment unfolds between two contrasting spatial zones, extending from west to east. At the entrance lies a narrow, intimate area, housing a series of smaller, self-contained ‘rooms within rooms.’ Beyond this threshold, the main living area transitions into a spacious open plan, connecting seamlessly with the western and eastern facades and the city beyond.
Three recessed volumes, evocative of smooth, weathered stones, shape the fluidity of the open plan. These forms create interstitial spaces that draw light deep into the interior, crafting dynamic light patterns, particularly during the morning and evening hours. Their softened edges enhance a sense of spatial continuity, while subtly reflective surfaces enrich the interplay of light and shadow. Beyond their aesthetic contribution, these volumes introduce new opportunities for seating and lounging, while discreetly housing hidden storage. A 12-metre-long element running along the northern party wall further reinforces the spatial dialogue between the kitchen and living areas, fostering a sense of uninterrupted flow.
