Loft LK1

A study of simplicity and refinement

"LK1 capitalises on its elevated position in Berlin, offering expansive views and unique light conditions. The design reinterprets these qualities through three recessed volumes, which structure the open plan and allow light to penetrate deeply into the space, creating dynamic light scenarios. The soft edges and reflective surfaces of these volumes enhance the continuity of the space, blurring the line between the kitchen, living areas, and the city beyond."

Dietmar Leyk, principal and founder

Apartment LK1 is situated at an unusual height for Berlin, offering expansive views and unique light conditions. The concept for transforming the spaces amplifies and reinterprets these qualities in a simple yet profound manner.

Two distinctly shaped spatial zones stretch between the facades facing west and east. A narrow, enclosed area, which includes some smaller-scale ‘rooms within rooms’, is located directly at the entrance to the apartment. The majority of the apartment features an open plan that extends towards both the western and eastern horizons, as well as towards the city.

Three recessed volumes, reminiscent of weathered stones, structure the open plan. Their interstitial spaces allow light to penetrate deeply into the room, creating intriguing light scenarios, particularly in the morning and evening. The soft edges of these volumes emphasise the notion of continuity, while their slightly reflective surfaces enhance the play of light and shadow. These volumes not only provide new seating and lounging areas but also conceal a number of hidden storage spaces. The 12-metre-long element along the northern party wall accentuates the spatial continuity between the kitchen and the living area.
